Jessie and Mark believe that the boy has some kind of psychological problems. In flashback, a child dies, possibly drowned in a bathtub.
So it was very traumatic experience for young Cody. The couple become startled when their dead biological son suddenly appears in their living room.
The film stars Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Jacob Tremblay, Annabeth Gish, and Dash Mihok. We also learned more about Cody’s mother. The monster in Cody’s nightmare turned out to be his mother. The messed up part is the dad he’s gone. It started out like a drama and in the end felt like a fairy tale story.
Although many will approach as a horror film, the supernatural is to build the family drama at the core. The boy tells Jessie that he's terrified to fall asleep, but she assumes it's just a natural fear for any young child. Unbeknownst to them, Cody is terrified of falling asleep.
At the end, Jessie finally understand what was going on with Cody.
In one moment they experience the incredible wonder of Cody's imagination, and in the next, the horrific nature of his night terrors. It didn’t feel like a horror movie, more than it was a sad, heart wrenching story of a little kid who lost his mother, and the foster parents that lost their son, and were trying to get over him.
